FAQ
General
What is mHBOT?
Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT) uses a comfortable, pressurised chamber to gently increase the level of oxygen dissolved in your blood. The extra oxygen supports cellular metabolism, helps reduce inflammation and aids tissue repair.
How is mHBOT different from medical HBOT?
Medical HBOT is delivered at higher pressures and is used for specific FDA/medical-approved indications under strict clinical supervision. mHBOT uses lower pressures and is commonly offered as a wellness and recovery therapy to support healing, reduce inflammation and improve recovery times.
Is mHBOT proven to work?
Research and clinical experience support that increasing tissue oxygenation can help reduce inflammation, support recovery and improve healing in many contexts. Results vary by individual and condition; mHBOT is best considered an adjunct therapy — a supportive part of a broader care plan.
What to Expect
What does a session feel like?
You lie or sit comfortably inside a soft, non-claustrophobic chamber. The chamber gently pressurises and you’ll notice mild ear pressure similar to taking off in an aeroplane. Sessions are quiet — many clients relax, read or listen to music.
How long is a session?
Typical sessions are 45–90 minutes depending on the treatment plan. Your practitioner will recommend a duration based on your goals and medical history.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on the reason for treatment. For short-term recovery or acute inflammation people often do 5–10 sessions; for chronic conditions a longer course may be suggested. Your clinician will tailor a plan to your needs.
How soon will I notice improvement?
Some people notice reduced stiffness or improved energy after 1–3 sessions. For many conditions benefits are gradual and become more noticeable after a course of treatments.
Benefits & Uses
Can mHBOT help reduce inflammation?
Yes — by increasing oxygen availability to tissues, supporting immune-cell function and encouraging cellular repair pathways, mHBOT can help reduce swelling and inflammatory discomfort as part of a treatment plan.
Is mHBOT useful for sports recovery?
Many athletes use mHBOT to support recovery, reduce muscle soreness and speed return to training. It’s commonly used alongside physiotherapy, rest, nutrition and other recovery strategies.
Can mHBOT help chronic conditions?
mHBOT may be helpful as an adjunctive therapy for some chronic musculoskeletal and inflammatory conditions. Discuss your specific condition with our clinician to understand potential benefits and realistic expectations.
Safety & Contraindications
Is mHBOT safe?
For most people, yes. mHBOT is non-invasive and generally well tolerated. A screening assessment is performed before the first session to confirm suitability.
Are there any side effects?
The most common temporary effect is ear or sinus pressure during pressurisation. Rare side effects include mild fatigue or transient lightheadedness. Serious complications are uncommon when screening and protocols are followed.
Who should not use mHBOT?
People with an untreated pneumothorax (collapsed lung), certain types of recent ear surgery or severe sinus disease, and some other specific medical conditions should not undergo HBOT until cleared by a physician. Full medical screening is required before treatment.
Can pregnant people use mHBOT?
Pregnant women should discuss risks and benefits with their healthcare provider; in many clinics pregnancy is a reason for additional caution or deferral until after delivery.
If I take medication, is that a problem?
Most medications are compatible with mHBOT, but some drugs (for example certain chemotherapy agents or medications that affect oxygen sensitivity) require review. Please bring a medication list to your consultation.
Practical Details
What should I wear?
Comfortable, non-restrictive clothing (T-shirt, leggings, shorts) is ideal. Avoid oil-based lotions or flammable products before treatment.
Can children use mHBOT?
Children can be treated with appropriate medical oversight and parental consent. We assess each case individually and tailor protocols to age and clinical need.
Will I feel claustrophobic?
Our soft chambers are roomy and well-lit; most clients do not feel claustrophobic. Staff will guide you through the first session and remain available throughout.
Can I drive after a session?
Yes — there is usually no downtime and clients drive home after treatment.
Is mHBOT covered by medical aid/insurance?
Coverage varies by provider and policy. In many cases wellness mHBOT is not covered, but medical HBOT for approved indications may be. Check with your insurer and bring any required authorisation to your appointment.
